UNIT 13: ACCIDENT PREVENTION
LESSON 3 (3, 4, 5)
A. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- read an informative text on fall prevention for youngchildren and write a massage;
- complete the crossword on Page 26.
*Resources: S.B., T.B., recording, pictures, powerpoint, flashcards, ...
B. Procedures:
I. Warm-up: Brainstorm Possible accidents
- T controls- ss play
- T gives feedback and introduces the new lesson.
2. Read the passage and do the tasks:
- Ask ss to open their books on Page 25 and look at the picture. Then set the context:
- Elicit ss’ answer: Can you guess what the passage is about?
- Teach vocabulary: edge: mép, rìa, bờ; balcony: ban công, lan can; tip: lời chỉ dẫn; roll off: lăn xuống; serious: nghiêm trọng; craddle: cái nôi; crawl: bò;
- Read each sentence aloud and stop to explain it.
- Get ss to read the text again to do the task individually.
- Get ss to check the answers in pairs.
- Get ss to report the answers.
Keys:
a. Tick the best title for the passage : B
b. Find the word in passage which mean:
1. move slowly on hands and knees. -> crawl 2. very bad, dangerous.-> serious
3. widely found.-> most common 4. ensure.-> make sure
c. Answer the questions:
1. Accident can happen to babies anywhere in the home.
2. Fall is the most common type of accident to babies.
3. The biggest danger for babies is falling down the balcony, the stairs or out of the window.
3. Write: Complete Linda’s message to Jim.
*Pre-stage: Ask ss to open their books on Page 26 and get them to read the guiding questions. They should finish the writing frame relying on the dialogues in lesson one. Remind ss of drafting before copying onto their copy-books.
*While-stage: Get ss to do the task individually. Monitor the activity and offer help as necessary. For lower ss, get them to work in pairs.
*Post-stage: Call on some good ss to read their writing aloud, the others listen and give comments.
4. Fun time: Do the crossword puzzle:
- Ask ss to open their books on Page 26 and stick the large sized sheet of paper with the crossword puzzle.
- Explains how to play the game. Discuss the pictures with ss and elicit their suggestions for the words in the grid.
- Call on ss to go to the board and write the answers.
Keys: 1. FALL 2. CUT 3. SCRATCH 4. BRUISE
5. BREAK A LEG 6. BURN 7. FIRE
5. Homelink: Have ss do their writing task at home for the class display in the next lesson.
